Rex
Q & A - Some helpful information
What
is the difference between a Devon and a Cornish Rex?
Devons and Cornish
differ in appearance (type). I have put up a photo
comparison of the two breeds here. Devons
have a modified wedge shaped head and the Cornish have a head that is
egg shaped when viewed from the side. A Cornish Rex has a long, Roman-style
nose. Devons have a very short muzzle, and a nose that has a stop, or
break, to it. This sort of gives it a "turned up" appearance. Both Devons
and Cornish have large ears. The ears of the Devon are set low on the
head and they have a distinct bell at the back. The bells of the Devon's
ears have little tufts of hair on them called earmuffs. Cornish Rex do
not have these. Cornish ears are set high on the head and are more rounded
than the ears of the Devon. Both cats have wavy coats, but a Cornish Rex
has no guard hairs in his coat; whereas all three types of hair are present
in the Devon coat. The coat of the Cornish Rex lies in nice, tight waves
along the entire length of his body. The Devon coat tends to be more "unruly"
and can wave into little curls everywhere, or thick to fine wavy ripples.
The Cornish Rex is a very fine-boned cat and when standing, there is a
definite arch to the back; like a Greyhound or Whippet. A Devon Rex does
not have this feature.
I've heard that Devons are hypoallergenic, is this true?
No cat is truly hypoallergenic, including the hairless Sphynx!
All cats have a protein in their saliva. This is what people who are allergic
to cats have reactions to. When cats groom themselves this protein is
transferred to their fur. As they shed and hairs fly off, the allergens
get spread around. Cats mostly shed guard hair. Devons have very few guard
hair, and they shed very little. Sometimes people with allergies are able
to tolerate living with a Devon Rex versus another breed of cat. Since
shedding in this breed is minimal compared to others, you may find that
your allergies don't bother you around a Devon (or Sphynx).
How long do Devons live?
The average life span is 15-17 years.
Do Devons get along well with other pets?
Devons are very easy going. They tend to get along quite well with other
cats, dogs and children! In general, the personality of a Devon is such
that he prefers company of any kind rather than he be the only one. A
lot of times for people who are not home a lot, they find that two Devons,
or at least someone to keep their Devon company (a dog or another cat,
etc) works better.
Did you perm their fur to make it wave like that? Did you shave
it?
No. The Devon is the result of a spontaneous mutation. They are born with those wonderful,
soft, wavy coats!
