About
Me: Hi, I'm Carole Goodwin. Welcome to Rex-N-FX
Cattery. I am located in the Northern California Bay Area. I have been breeding
and showing Devon Rex since 1995. I am a proud member of the CFA
Devon Rex Breed Council, and the Devon
Rex Breed Club (a National CFA affiliated breed club). I also belong
to San Francisco Revelers and Crow Canyon Cat Club; show producing clubs
in the Northern California Bay Area. Although still considered a newcomer
in the cat fancy, this has become a big part of my life. I have had cats
in my life for over 30 years now and Devons have been a natural migration
into the world of pedigreed cats. I very much enjoy the social and competitive
aspects of the cat fancy and spend many weekends a year showing off my cats
at CFA shows around the area. Although
I love all breeds of cats as well as domestics, the rex breeds captured
my heart the most. I love their odd looks and have come to cherish their
unusual, people-oriented, intelligent personalities even more! These cats
get into your heart like no other breed I have experienced.
Breeding Philosophy: I am a hobby breeder who breeds and shows cats for the pure love and enjoyment of the cat fancy. My goals are to produce healthy, happy, outgoing Devon Rex that meet the written breed standards in CFA. In addition to the type conformation to the written standard, health and temperament are just as important to me. Devon Rex come in almost every possible color and pattern combination that exists in domestic cats. This breed is not one that is normally bred for color. Although I love certain colors and patterns, I am not specifically breeding and selecting using color as a criteria. I am currently working with whites, silvers, chocolates and the tabby pattern. I get a variety of colors this way in both solid and classic, mackerel and spotted tabby patterns. Raising Kittens: Litters are raised separately from one another and from the other cats in my home. I prefer to raise kittens in my office where I spend most of my time. I use a kittening, or birthing cage, when my litters first start out. Many breeders use these cages as a means of giving the queen a safe and comfortable place to give birth. The kittens are housed exclusively in this cage until they begin to walk about, usually around 3-4 weeks of age. At that point in time, the door is opened and they are allowed to begin to explore more of their environment. Once they are able to eat solid food and use the litterbox on their own, they are free to come and go about the room as they wish. I never use cages as a means of confining a cat for any length of time. Kittens are socialized with the rest of the household around 8-9 weeks of age. They are vet checked, spayed or neutered if they are to be pets, and fully vaccinated before going to their new homes. Once kittens have matured and received their last vaccine, they are ready to leave home between the ages of 12-16 weeks. Adopting From Rex-N-FX: I
use contracts when I sell my kittens and all buyers are required to sign
one. The contracts are basic and only one page long. You may request a
copy of my contract before you agree to adopt a kitten from me and I am
happy to furnish you with one. I have between 2-6 litters a year and do
not keep a waiting list. I prefer for potential buyers to contact me and
to meet in person if possible. Due to the small number of kittens available,
I like for people who are seriously interested in adopting one from me
to keep in touch. Once a litter is born I am able to accept a limited
number of deposits from pre-approved potential buyers. Feel free to contact
me at any time for up to date information, or check my Kitten
page for updates and availability. You may also send me a note using my
Kitten Inquiry Form. Because I have few
pets to place, I prefer to place my kittens locally. Therefore, I don't
ship my kittens as I prefer to meet you and have you come and meet me
and my cats and pick up your new kitten in person.
I do ask that all kittens I sell not be declawed.
This is an issue that I feel very strongly about. I have recently come
across some very good articles on declawing
that describe the procedure and the possible aftereffects it can have
on the cat. Please take a look at Declawing
Cats: Issues & Alternatives, if you need more convincing yourself.
There are links to many sites from here as well as links to alternatives
to declawing. Selling Show Cats & Breeders: I am fortunate to work with other wonderful, ethical, honest breeders all over the country. You can find links to their web sites on my Links page. They have entrusted me with some beautiful cats from terrific lines. Many thanks to Wendy Renner of Dilettante and Linda and Susan Peterson of Karmacatz for their beautiful Devons. Because I spend a lot of time getting to know someone before I purchase a cat from them, a trusting relationship is able to form. The other breeders that I work with all have similar philosophies to my own and do things in much the same manner as I do. Because trust is very important to me in anyone I work with, I will never sell a breeding cat outright to a total stranger. I am happy to mentor new people into the cat fancy and help give them a start if the situation works out for this. But this is usually only possible when the person is located near enough to me to receive hands-on mentoring. I feel it is very important to learn as much as possible about this breed before plunging head first into a breeding program. Most new people that start out in the cat fancy can learn first by showing an altered cat in Premiership. Not only is this a lot of fun but it's very rewarding and tough competition. It will give you the opportunity to see if you really want to take on this hobby as it can be financially expensive and also very time consuming. Learning the breed by showing a premier allows you to get involved in the breed, meet other breeders, and to discover if this is right for you without the financial commitment that starting a full breeding program entails. Contact me if you would like more information. Showing: I show my cats in CFA (Cat Fanciers Association) and have enjoyed the competition and success found there. During the 1999-2000 season the first CFA Regional Win for my cattery was attained by GRP, RW/SGCA, RW Rex-N-FX Chiffon Debutante, shown by Lisa Ann Perry. I am very proud of this and look forward to what the future brings. Every weekend there are one or more cat shows happening somewhere in the country. I mostly show in CFA's Northwest Region, which is where I reside. But, I also attend shows all over the country at various times. Once a year, the Devon Rex Breed Club puts on "Devon Heaven." This event is in conjunction with a CFA sanctioned show only we have Devons and their breeders and exhibitors attend en masse from everywhere. For anyone seriously interested in the breed, this is a must-see event! And Finally: I'm a "stay-at-home" cat mom now that my daughter has grown up and moved out. I enjoy gourmet cooking, dabble in gardening, am always working on the house, and love photography - especially of kittens! I hope you enjoy your visit to my site. Please let me know what you think. |
